MRgFUS: A New Non-Surgical Alternative in Tremor Treatment

As an alternative to Deep Brain Stimulation (#DBS), which has long been a source of hope for our patients, a new high-tech treatment alternative is taking its place in clinical practice: MR-Guided Focus Ultrasound Therapy (#MRgFUS).

What is MR-Guided Focus Ultrasound Therapy? MRgFUS is an innovative, non-surgical method used to treat Parkinson's and other movement disorders, particularly in patients where symptoms such as tremors, rigidity, heaviness, and slowness are prominent.

In this method:

1,024 separate high-intensity ultrasound waves are combined with Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). High-intensity ultrasound waves are focused through the scalp onto the target area inside the brain causing the tremors, disabling this area without the need for any incisions.

During the procedure, thermal energy is increased in the target area using focused ultrasound waves until the patient's symptoms improve. Once the most effective dose is reached, a controlled ablation is performed, creating a small lesion similar to a laser effect.

The entire procedure is performed inside an MRI scanner on an outpatient basis. The MRI provides real-time imaging of the brain, allowing for precise target determination and monitoring of the heat generated by the ultrasound waves.

As a result, tremors, rigidity, and slowness can be significantly reduced. Five-year follow-up results indicate a significant and permanent improvement in tremors for 70–73% of patients following MRgFUS.

Who is it Suitable For?

MRgFUS is a viable alternative, particularly for:

Patients with tremor that markedly affects daily life.

Patients who do not want surgical treatment or are not suitable candidates for surgery.

The goal is to improve the quality of life of patients with movement disorders and enable them to regain independence in daily activities by reducing tremors, stiffness, and slowness. Please remember that every patient's situation is unique. To find out if MRgFUS treatment is right for you, you can reach us at our support line: 0533 273 40 41.
